Headed out to Glacier National Park....any site suggestions? - 07-26-2010, 05:29 PM

My wife and I are headed to Glacier National Park this week and I thought I'd ask if anyone has any shooting locations within the park that they'd like to share?

We visited once in 2002, but that was long before I got really interested in photography.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

We were there a few weeks ago. The hike to Avalanche Lake was well worth it, the lake was glassy when we got there. The lodge at the Many Glacier area is a nice place to shoot sunrise.

I'd also like to hear suggestions on shooting locations. My husband and I are hopefully headed there next month. Jeff, we were also there in 2002. Was interested in photography at the time, but had no clue what I was doing (not that I'm much improved now, but...) and to top it off, my old Nikon 6006 broke the first full day we were in the park...talk about upsetting! It's a stunning park and we can't wait to go back with a working camera. ;)

Have a great time! I'd love to hear your report when you return.

Jeff, this is Wayne Tabor, I will be in your fall Teton tour. I just got back from Glacier, and you better take plenty of data cards! Anywhere your point your camera is a winner.
Many Glacier Lake is great for reflective sunrises, the hike to Hidden Lake from Logan Pass is great. The hike to Avalance Lake is good, as well as the one down to St. Mary falls. Rising Sun is a great base of ops. Go into the store there and purchase book on the hikes available--they are rated in length and difficulty. I want to go back!

Just returned from Glacier National Park and I can suggest three locales that you will want to visit on your trip:

1) Many Glacier - the shots from the top of the hill overlooking the Many Glacier hotel are stunning. Try to frame some of your shots with the windswept trees that are at the southern tip of the hill.

2) Two Medicine Lake - normally windy here, but if you can get there at the right time when its not blowing a gale, you should be able to get a mirror image of the mountains in the lake.

3) Logan Pass - just before you reach the apex of Logan Pass, look to the steep rock cliffs on your right as you drive east - there are mountain goats with their babies in the crevasses, and we saw other goats grazing on the meadow to the north at the same location.

Be forewarned - if you are staying at the west side of the park, the drives to many of the best photo sites take several hours. If you have a choice and can do so, it is better to stay on the east side at St Marys or Babb - then a drive to Many Glacier or Two Medicine is much easier.

The Going to the Sun road has construction at two different spots and you'll be delayed at least twenty minutes at each construction site. But make the trip and definitely turn off at Sun Point and make the short hike to the Sun Point rocks where you'll get a magnificent view of the mountains and the lake.

Yes, I will post a couple - but here's a starter to whet your apetite. Can you imagine how great this place is when it is not reflected in a window, but simply in front of you and your lens?

Thanks! Yes, I can.
I'm really looking forward to going back. I just fell in love with the area when we were there 8 years ago.

Thanks for the info Jeff. Just met with my wife's sister and brother-in-law today who said they would be willing to go to Glacier NP any time we are ready. I was about to pack the truck and head out when my wife nixed going this year. We leave for Minnesota in two weeks and then she and her sisters head to Pennsylvania in October. I have a year to plan. So your tips are the first in the folder.

We were in Glacier around July 4th. Here are a couple of shots. My first time there and I am ready to go back.

#1 - Avalanche Lake

#2 - Swiftcurrent Lake at Sunset
