Thank you both.

Settings:

ISO100
17mm
f/10
22 seconds (bulb mode).
Focus set manually to infinity (since the trees were well beyond the distance at which focus would be at infinity anyway).

I just had to wait for cars to start coming over the hill to hold the shutter release down in bulb mode.

When the sun is at that level, things get dark fast. I have a remote cable that lets me use my Pocket Wizards as a remote trigger, but I didn't have time to dig all of that out and remember which switches do what. When I do long exposures without the remote I use the shutter release that's on the battery grip so I can rest my palm on the tripod neck. That's probably less than the most stable thing in the entire world but it works for me.
