The Most Photographed Barn in the World...? - 05-12-2011, 09:49 AM

Critique: CC:

Well, if a couple of the popular photo magazines are to be believed, then this is the most photographed barn in the world.

It is the Thomas Moulton barn on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park. I've been there a couple of dozen times and there are usually a dozen or more photographers present - especially at first light.

I thought I would post a shot I took there last September and also see if others who have visited the area would like to add their shots of the barn to this thread. Because every day has different light and different weather, I bet amongst the thousands of TPF members that we've got dozens and dozens of interpretations of this scene.

If you've been to Jackson Hole and have a photo of the place, let's see it.

And of course, C & C of my photo are always welcomed and appreciated. One thing I might point out is that the haze/low clouds you see at the base of the mountain range are usually present early in the morning on colder days and are on top of the Snake River that runs at the base of the mountains.

Jeff,

That's awesome! Here are a couple of mine on one of our outings there:

I am looking forward to shooting it again in July!

Believe it or not, I still haven't processed my photos of the Moulton Barn. If you haven't heard, I made an ass out of myself as I ran up to the barn to get a different perspective and fell on my butt - twice (don't worry, I saved the camera). Of course there are photos:

When I recovered I did get a few shots I'm ok with but mentally moved on to the lesser known John Moulton barn just down the road. There I took an IR shot:

Joe

PS. I do have the "behind the scenes shot" from Wil's spectacular photo above (the ones with the shadows) if anyone's interested.

PPS. If you haven't done, go see the Grand Teton's. It's a spectacular trip that will have your creative eye going berserk!

Joe,

That made me laugh out loud... again. I never would've thought to run up there and get in 50 photographers' shot... serious cajones! It definitely was an enjoyed moment by all.

And I would love to see the "behind the scenes shot" when you have the time.

None of my IR shots came out to my liking but I've got a different IR camera this time... so hopefully I'll come back with something decent.

Thanks, Fred - appreciate the kind words.

And thanks to Wil and Joe for joining in to show us their interpretations, which are truly stellar pieces of photo work.

Full disclosure - I was one of the many photographers on the other side of the fence laughing out loud when Joe did his tumble in front of the barn. For the millions of shots that have been taken here, I don't think many can top a shot of a man running at full tilt and tripping on a ground squirrel hole and still having the presence of mind to save his camera....!

I love how you can see the shadows of all the photographers in Will's picture.

I should point out that I waited until everyone had gotten "their" shot and that most were putting their equipment away when I ran out there. Only a handful of people still had fingers on the shutter and I did "announce" I was going to run out for 30 seconds and take a shot.

Here's the behind the scene's shot for Wil's photo. A few minutes later, the sun showed up and Wil got his shadows. Wil is at the far right of the photo and I "believe" Jeff is at the other end in the orange hat.

Great to see a behind the scenes shot, Joe - and if I recall there were another half dozen or so people on the left out of the frame.

And no, that's not me in the orange hat. I may have been getting my gear straight at the car. But I sure remember the moment as we were all winding down.

You're being modest Jeff. I remember some folks hearing that the great and talented Jeff Clow from Flickr fame was in the house and were bending your ear a bit!

Great shots, guys!

Joe, before I read the caption, I thought you were just using some unusual technique for getting the shot without casting your own shadow into the shot! LOL I was going to compliment you on your dedication and outstanding human-tripod techniques! ;-)

Was this a workshop or something? I couldn't stand shooting with so many others, it would drive me crazy!

Jeff, I've been there several times. It's a place you can spend days photographing.
I may be going there late September to get the fall colors.

Great shots Jeff.
I went there one year for the fall colors. I will never do it again. It's a damn zoo.
Well over 100 photographers lined up along the road shooting Owbow Bend....every morning.
