Star Trails and Long Exposure - 07-31-2009, 02:18 AM

I was walking up this pitch black road and decided to try bulb mode for the first time. After a few failed attempts, I got this on a 5 minute exposure.

Of course, there's always a back story to why I'm walking up some road in the middle of nowhere at 2AM. You can read about that on my photoblog...

Its a really cool photo. It almost looks like rain that never touches the ground.

Great star trail, you must have a rock of a tripod.

SanDShooter: Thanks! When I put it up on Flickr yesterday, I named it Raining Stars...

isam250: Yes, I have a Phottix Cleon wireless remote and for bulb mode, you hold the wired receiver end and click the button.

Lilikoi the cat: I have a Manfrotto 055x-prob with a 488RC4 ball head. It's pretty solid and for this shot I had the center column pulled out and horizontal with the legs splayed out as wide as they would go. I was basically laying on the ground behind it like a sniper behind a rifle.

It's a great tripod except for I'm having a hard time taking it on my motorcycle because it's long. I'm going to put together a side holster mount or something on my bike on the opposite side of my exhaust.

Thanks for the comments!

That's awesome Joe. I'm going to have to give that a shot (no pun intended).

ive got a lowepro camera backpack that has a spot on the outside to fit a folded tripod. i've used it a few times on my motorcycle, works alright as long as you stay a little bit leaned forward

I use a Tenba sling bag and my tripod with the ballhead on it is just a little too long. Even if I put it up high and lean a little, I can't sit up at a stop light at all and the weight of it as it hangs off the side is a little much. I had a couple "oh ****" moments going up 84 towards Alice's... It just isn't working out.

It looks like I'm working on the mount tomorrow... I'll post pics when it's done!

Thanks Alan!

I keep a gorrilapod in my camera bag, its great because of its size can take it anywhere. if you cant find something to mount it to, shots from down near the ground still look cool
