Big Bend NP Stuff - 07-07-2011, 05:48 PM

Critique: NC:

This past April I went to Fort Davis mainly to photo the "Rockhouse Fire" While I was there I went thru the BiBe (naturally) and took a few snaps-Hope you enjoy them.

Just for the record, if you haven't been to BiBe, You're not a Texan. I had to say that, it usually gets me in trouble, but I'm old enough that I don't care!
I just noticed a dust bunny on my Goat Mtn shots, cleaning time

Great shots. One day I'll have to see that area. Love the "Desert View" one.

Thks Keith! Yeah, once you start exploring that whole area(not just the Park) you will become addicted. It is rugged rough country & I love it!!

Nice shots Leon! I don't think I got any photos of Mule Ears Peak. We stopped and check it out from a far, but I didn't take any photos.
Guess I have to go back.

I hunted west of there for 20 years. All day hikes with 40lbs on my back 10 miles from the truck and 6 hours from a hospital.

Neat stuff.....

Thks Jake, There is a nice 7 mile(rd trip) hike that will give you a lot of different perspectives of the surrounding views.

Yeah Cj, the narrowist part of the Rio at that time was about 4.5-5 yards when I was back the end of June it was about 4.5 feet.

Johnny, it is great country!! I've been going out there since 1962. In the last years I go at least 5-7 times a year & each time its like new again. Of course I go all the way to Candelaria. I really like the Chinati Mtns (Pinto Canyon road is a real trip) Unfortunately a lot of people miss the rugged St Park area & points where you may have hunted. Hiway 170 (River Road) has to be one of the most scenic drives in the state! Thks for looking.

Sounds like you know the area. The ranch pretty much has the whole Sierra Vieja Mountain range on it and Gettisburg peak is on it's north end.

About 4 years ago on a hunt they ran into 2 guys with broken 4 wheelers and around 500lbs of weed. Instead of helping them go back to Mexico they called the cops. That was it for me. When you start throwing rocks at the bad guys down there they do not play.

River Road is it's south boundary and I would not drive a mile on it in these current times we are having.

15 years ago we would sit on the porch in the evenings and listen to machine guns going off. Please be careful....

Wife & I were there in mid-Oct., 2010, and the haze was so bad that photography, at much of a distance, was almost imposable.
Have reservations for Nov. 2011, hope for better luck.
You did a great job.

LOL-Johnny, I guess I've been lucky in the 50 years I've been going out there, I've had an incident or 2, but no real problems. In fact in the last 15 years I've had my car stolen twice, been robbed once, & attempted hi-jacked once. Just 2 years ago I moved out of my apartment to a Senior complex because I felt unsafe due to the gun shots that occasionally rang out. And that was all in good ole Houston, Tx.
Anyway thanks & at my age, I'm always careful!!

Thks Pat, good luck on your trip in Nov.
The pollution seems to get a little worse each year. This past week I went thru there Tuesday & it was clearer that I had seen it in a long time, but when I got back Thur. to spent the night & next day, it was horrible again. The wind had kicked up & I guess with the dry conditions it had chased up a lot of dust.

I'm looking forward to setting something up in the not so distant future. Thanks Leon. I have actually sold a copy of that shot...for real dollars.
