A Few From Yellowstone National Park - 08-10-2011, 06:22 AM

Critique: CC:

Just got back from a week in Yellowstone. Such an amazing place. This was my 3rd time there in the last 10 years, and I know I've barely put a dent in seeing the place. These are only a few of the hundreds I took

Hi Suzanne.

I especially like Old Faithful in the second shot. Nice drama with the clouds. I also like the people just to the right of Lower Falls in the third to last photo. Really gives a sense of scale to the falls.

I have to get back there some day.

Thanks Tim and Jeff! Shortly after the Old Faithful shot was taken, those ominous clouds let loose and saturated everything with rain and hail. The temperature must have dropped 30 degrees in seconds. We made a mad dash for the Inn, and got under the breezeway just in the nick of time. I loved the contrast of the steam against the blackness, so I wasn't leaving until it was over, LOL. I thought about cloning the people at the falls out, but I too like the scale they give to the scene. The Yellowstone/Teton area is one of my favorite places on Earth.

Great work Suzanne. I love that area of the country. The waterfall still looks pretty full for this time of year--we drove up to Glacier Park last month and ALL the rivers were full. They had the winter they thought would never end last year (my folks live in MT).

If you haven't been, one interesting, and rather poignant, place to see is Quake Lake and the area where the mountain fell after the 1959 earthquake. A number of campers are still buried under the debris field. It's north of West Yellowstone on US 287.

On the waterfall shot with the people Is there a boat on the opposite side of the bank from the people?

Thank you Leon, Ken & Gordon!

Leon, I think the falls are my favorites too. I took more photos of the falls than anything else. There was a tremendous volume of water going over. The roar could be heard long before the water could be seen.

Gordon, I had to blow up the original to see exactly what that is in the water. It's a dead pine tree, with some other debris piled up on top of it. If you go to Yellowstone the trek to that vantage point where the people are standing, is well worth the pain of going back up! It's amazing to stand there and see that much water flowing by a few feet away.

Ken, I never heard of Quake Lake. Wow, how tragic. That would have been an interesting place to see. There was a LOT of water in all the rivers and streams. Many areas still had thick snow on the ground. Glacier Park is my absolute favorite place. We went there 2 years ago, and a part of my soul stayed there. That year Logan Pass opened "late" on my birthday, there 3rd week of June. I follow them on Facebook, and saw that this year they didn't open GTS to Logan Pass until the 2nd week of July! Were you able to get to the pass when you were there? I've seen pictures from opening day... the visitor center still had snow almost to the top of the roof! WOW!!

Suzanne,

Each of the photos is beautifully rendered and cropped for impact.
Great colors. Love #2 of Old (not so) Faithful.
(I assume) Great use of a polarizer.

Happy shooting and warm regards,

Michael

Thanks Michael! LOL about "Old Unreliable"! When we got to that area we checked and the next eruption was supposed to be in about 40 minutes. 20 minutes later we look over and the thing was blasting off! So then we check again, and it says about an hour later. Well, I think it had "performance anxiety" because we sat there for a good 45 minutes past the said hour before anything happened! Actually I had a polarizer but I threw it away last year after it made all my photos soft (it was a cheapie) I use Topaz Adjust with the "Photo Pop" preset, and it really does wonders for making clouds pop.

PS.... great license plate!!!

on the plate. I was surprised I could get it when I moved here in '01. A big state like this I figured it would have been snapped up years ago!

I have but have never used Topaz! Kinda favor Nik Software. Got to try it now that I see the results. Stunning.

Michael, you'll love Topaz. I don't use it on every photo, but certain ones really need it, and it makes a subtle, but huge difference. Of these photos I think only the last doesn't have it, but it does have a couple people turned into trees, LOL! The great thing about Topaz, is their 30 day free trial. Needles to say, on the 29th day I bought the program.

Thank you Sheri! I hope you get to go someday soon. It is truly an amazing and inspiring place, and something everyone should see at least once in their life.
