I thought that the Nikon matrix meter was the best ec=ver. Or is that creative artisitic freedom at work?
For the pano...
Is a D3 full frame? Thoughts based on full frame. Was the lens horizontal or vertical? Try vertical. Try the same location with a 35mm or 50mm lens vertical. Do you use Windows? Try Microsoft ICE (free) for stitching. Bonus style points for braving the heat.

That's artistic freedom (D3 = Full Frame). I'll try it vertically next time - I was actually just scouting the location. The stitching was done in photoshop - I should have corrected the distortion of each image first before stitching, but wasn't really doing anything too serious.

Learning is good.
My experience: Longer F.L. rotated vertical works best for me. I would like to see what happens with the 20mm lens & vertical orientation. I can get close to that combination. Might be fun. Try ICE. It's free, fast & if/when you find the one adjustment tools, works very well. It reads RAW files with the correct Codec file add on.
