Critique: CC:

I drive past this barn / shed everyday and finally decided to see what I could do with the scene. I love black & white but always have trouble with the conversions. Editing done using Lightroom only.

Dan, neglected but a great photo prop!
Have you tried adding a bit of blue filter to darken the roof on the barn for contrast?

Thanks Michael. I went back and tried adding a little blue channel, but that lightened up the sky area too much to me. Here is another edit in which using a Lightroom adjustment brush I increased the contrast of the building alone and also adjusted the black level of the image to lighten the shadows especially on the tree.

Dan, sorry to be a PITA, but try to lighten up the entire shed just a bit to show detail on the side wall and in the "stalls".
I think it might help focus the eyes on the main subject.
When shooting B&W film I still use a '70s era monochromatic Zone VI viewing filter to preview the scene without color and only for contrast between colors. It is not that easy to get similar colors to separate in B&W, but subtle filter adjustments can do the trick.

Happy shooting and warm regards,

Michael

Not being a PITA at all Michael, I appreciate the input. I re-edited the last image to bump the exposure of the building alone 1/3 stop, but looking at it here now it looks like I lost some of the contrast on the sheds wood & tin.

Dan, I like the conversion on the second one. Maybe just a little bit lighter would be good. Great subject!

What bother me a bit is the tilt of the shed. I think it might look better if straightened even though the horizon might be off.

Quick try... Straightened and lightened a bit using levels to up the midtones a little bit and exposure (up about 1/3 stop) for an overall boost.
