About a 1/4 mile radius sprinkler

I stopped to shoot this because of the contrast of the deep green (anhydrous ammonia?) grass to the fresh cut hay field.

That's wild. Why does that stuff turn the field green and what's it for?

Anhydrous ammonia is used as fertilizer. I don't know why the dividing line between the green and not-so-green in the photo, unless that's the limit of the sprinkler in the field. It almost looks as if the left side is recently cut, while the darker green hasn't been cut yet.

I don't know that much about irrigated farming (my father in law was a dryland farmer), so I don't know if they inject the fertilizer into the sprinkler system, or if they use a mechanical version (either a tractor or airplane). Something I'll have to check out.

They can inject NH3 into the sprinkler system. Sometimes they put it in the ground during cultivation. There was a tank out by the engine driven water well. It could have been propane but there was also a diesel tank there so I made the assumption that he was injecting anhydrous.

The line was there because the field had just been cut and harvested. Out of frame to the right there were a bunch of round bales.

Looking on Google Earth it looks like the field is in 3 sections. 1/2 and then two 1/4's
