Northern Nebraska - 09-28-2011, 01:33 PM

Critique: NC:

My introduction: First time post and I am ameture at best. I photograph all the time and self taught for the most part. Anyway my wife and I were headed north through Nebraska and this caught my eye. I had to photoshop out a humungous power line that went up the hill and into the skyline. I am definately open to critique. I have tough skin you will not hurt my feelings. I need to learn.

Self critique: I can't believe I cut the tree in half on the left side.

Congrats on the first post...nice scenic photo...was this shot in color and then converted to B&W? Did you grow up in East Bernard? I'm from Eagle Lake...grew up on farm near Bonus...had quite a few relatives living in the East Bernard/Lissie/Eagle Lake area...

I am not really sure how far south of the Dakota line but it was due south of the Pine Ridge Reservation. I am just not sure where.

It was in color and extremely green when I took it. I was just poking around with photoshop and changed it. I just lked the look better. On my monitor it is really sharp but on the forum it seems to have lost a lot of the sharp focus lines.

I live north of East Bernard on the east side of the San Bernard river. If you go north on hwy60 and cross the middle Bernard river I live due east across the San Bernard. I have run those prarries my whole life. I grew up in Spring Valley but every duck and goose season found me poling around the gravel roads in search of snow geese and ducks. Lots of fond memories. I have family in Eagle Lake.

So far as critique. I think I should have dropped the barn to the lower right hand corner and opened up the sky. Cutting the tree off bothers me too. Come on fellas tear it up I need to learn.

It all depends on preference or what you are going to do with the shot. I'm not the greatest at landscapes, but...

I like the panoramic crop you have, maybe just a little more length.

I would probably crop out the tree and like you said, move things down (rule of 3rds) since the landscape isn't all that interesting.

Even though it is sticking out, I like the tree at the top. That gives me an impression that things are deserted, but doesn't overkill it like giving more sky or background would.

I hope you don't mind since you have marked yes to "Can others edit my photos". Maybe like this?
