Very Large Array at night and meteors - 10-24-2011, 08:11 AM

Critique: NC:

Todd and I went all the way out to the VLA to shoot the milkyway. There was also a meteor shower, I got so lucky with this shot, can you see the faint meteors? There are 4 of them in the first shot. Did not even see them during the shot.

Todd did several time laps shots as well.
12 hours from Dallas. Not much sleep. Surprised I did not call in today and just sleep.

Todd and I basically shoot almost side by side, so he has some of the same shots.

Stellar shots as usual. Keith! Love the dangling sign on the abandoned hotel shot.

I was secretly hoping your photos would suck. But they don't. They are awesome.

But I still have hope that Todd's shots will suck!

Thanks guys, glad you like them.
I know Todd got some great shots too.

He can post them in this thread too if he wants. We shoot side by side a lot.
One of the only photographers I hang out with who does not get all upset that we get the same shot when we go out.

We are going back, we need special permission to stay there all night.
So make sure you can go next time.
We will go back in the early spring.

Awesome shots Keith! I love the compositions - perfect balance.

If you plan to do a lot of this type of photography, I would recommend a program such as SkyGazer to ID the "streaks." They might be meteors or they might be satellites. I used SkyGazer to determine what some of the streaks were in my night photos at Big Bend. Luckily the time/date in my camera was set correctly (for a change), so after the fact I was able to determine that one of the streaks was the Hubble. Other streaks were usually satellites that I could ID with the software based on time and direction of travel. I've also intentionally gone out to photograph the ISS streak by using the software to predict the time, elevation, direction and speed of travel and magnitude.

Patti

Thanks Patti, Will check into that for sure.

When I took Todd, Jake and Jennifer to Utah, we saw the shuttle and space station fly over. It was the coolest thing from the whole trip to see. It looked so low in the sky, really lit the place up. Had a gasious gloud between them. They were brighter than an incoming airplanes light.

I haven't been able to process many, but here's a few. This place was very cool at night. Can't wait to go back.

Like your first and last one Todd.
Did you check your shots for the meteors?
We were shooting almost in the same direction at the same time.

I know we both got one from the night before from the place in texas.
I have not processed it yet though and I am done til I get a goods nights rest.
Doped up on coffee today at work.

Yeah, There's actually tons of meteors... almost to the point of giving me fits. I processed a few out here and there.

I was dead ass tired too.. didn't get to sleep until almost 1:30.. didn't go to work today.
