The Drifter - 11-03-2011, 04:09 PM

Critique: NC:

Not quite a self portrait, but often times it is how I feel.

Used 6 images to create this.
Was not sure which forum to put this in. Mods feel free to move.
But since I used mostly landscape images I took, I figured here was as good as any place.

Keith - a very cool way to convey a message and a great job on combining the 6 pictures to create one. I like it and the message.

Great job combining the images into one interesting composition, although i have to admit I have no idea what the message is.

I just wish you could have gotten some foot prints in there so it didn't look like the figure was place there by helicopter.
I also notice that the shadow cast by the figure doesn't match the direction of the shadow on the car or the direction the sun is hitting the mountain and dunes.

Two thumbs waaaaay up. I love the technical combination of the images. I do, however, wish you could change the light source direction on the hiker. It comes neither from the sun nor the lit cross. It is more than just changing the shadow direction. There is some dodging and burning (or another approach with layers and soft light adjustments) to be done on the hiker himself. It is the only detractor in an otherwise fascinating composition.

Thanks for the comments guys.
I worked on the shadows last night and am adding foot prints as well.
Also added some atmospheric effects.
I will post the second version soon.

Thanks for your feedback.

Here is a new version.
Added some fog in the valley of the sand dunes. Corrected shadow on the hiker and added a tree and foot prints in the sand.

What do you guys think of these additions?

I think the latest version is stronger image. It is very nicely done and has a very clear story/message which makes it a great composite.

Thanks Scott.

Here is a verticle version someone at another forum suggested.
Don't like it as much but it turned out ok.

Very impressive! Love the revised edition with the fog. I could totally see this being used as the theme shot of some of our services.

i like the contrast of the first one, footprints of the second one. to make it a little more realistic, think about the bright spot in the sky as being the main light, and cast the shadows appropriate to that, i think the guys night be a little long, but now I'm nit picking, and i defiantly like the car and the tree

I also like the latest image as well and it seems to tell a different story to me than the other versions. I do think that the shadows on the drifter/hiker is a little to long as the sun looks pretty high in the sky, but that is getting very picky . . . Great job on these.

Have you thought about a different color cast to these - I am wondering if you moved towards a warmer cast (but not to much warmer) the feel and may change the message.

Looking at these is motivating me to create a few images that have been in my head for a while.
