Golden Gate Bridge. A different perspective. - 11-08-2011, 11:21 PM

Critique: CC:

I had tried in the past, to shoot the Golden Gate Bridge from this location, but the weather was never cooperating.
On this particular day, the sun was supposed to set between the towers.
It rained the day before. It rained that morning. It even rained the next day.
But for some reason, it cleared up long enough for me to try to get my shot.

I'm still not sure if I'm happy with it. What do you think?

I really like the idea, but I think I might like it more with a little more compression.

I wish there was a little more light on the foreground dock - not really sure what it is. Also don't like that the picture seems to be bisected and the sun is almost directly in the middle. Also, the horizon is a little off. How would it look (and is it possible) to get a little higher?

Love the colors and the motion of the water. Very cool shot.

I like the shot but agree with Tom about more light on the foreground. Did you use a GND filter?
Not going to say HDR, but a little exposure blending might of helped.

Oh, and I would probably crop a little off the top so the horizon isn't in the center.

Thanks Guys.
I was standing on the very end of a newer fishing pier.
What you see in the foreground is the old fishing pier that continues out another quarter of a mile.

I'll play around with your suggestions this evening.

Thanks.

I like your title "A different prespective." My entire life I have seen the bridge from the same vantage point. This is a cool take on it! I agree with the comments about the horizon being titled, maybe just a degree. Personally, I like the Sun where it is.

I really like the concept Alan. Definitely a good idea and I hope you try it again so on my next visit to Northern CA you can show me how to get that shot. LOL.

I agree with the others about the horizon. What would have really added to the shot is if the bird that's in flight on the left was up in the sky more. Just can't get what you want out of those unpaid models.

Thanks Guys.

Jim, I'll be more than happy to show you where that shot was taken from.
However, it's a very short window (one in the spring, and one in the fall) when the sun sets between the towers like that.
In fact, I've had that planned for months, and had to wait until now to get the shot.

Okay folks. Straightened and cropped.

Here's one where the sun was a little lower, where you can get a better look at the dilapidated dock in front of me.

Edit: By the way, there were no filters used on these images.

Ouch! And then you have to hope the skies are clear. Quite a challenge. Is there a web site that documents when those dates are each year? Far be it from me to plan a "family" trip around photographic concerns.

I like the second shot too. Can't really decide which I like better. Oh, is that Alcatraz above the old dock? I'm totally confused as to where you could be standing. At first I thought you were on Treasure Island. Guess not. Maybe near Richmond?

Yes. That is Alcatraz. In standing on the end of a fishing pier at the Berkeley Marina.

As for finding when the sunset is between the towers, I used an ap on my iPhone.
It's called TPE (The Photographers Ephemeris).
