Vertical - Nice shot. The dark tree trunks become a stronger compositional element, also like how the red leaves are sort of in layers going up.
Horizontal composition is more static in comparison, especially with the fense gap roughly center-frame. Cropping off the left side to get a 5:4 ratio would improve it, but I still think the vertical is better.

For me it would depend upon the subject of the photo...if it's the trees, then vertical as in #1...if it's the fence then a horizontal view with a more angled view of the fence...nice fall colors in these David...

Very nice David-I also like the vertical as it keeps me focused on the colors. Like Ron said if it was the fence you were after then the bottom one is really nice. Maybe it's the time of the year, but I really prefer the vertical shot-Beautiful!!!

uno mas for vertical.....it just comes together better for me. Do like the fence but it needs to be uninterrupted to act as the primary element in a horizontal frame, the 'gap' in the middle removes the horizontal element and makes me focus on the gap in the center instead of moving me across the image. Making the gap off center may help the horizontal one work better.

I love the fence in the horizontal photo, but with that said, I don't think it's dominant enough to hold you attention in the photo. So, if I look at the horizontal, I'm kind of lost and not sure really what the focus is
However, I agree that the vertical photo has the dark trees that really attract your eye, but is still complimented by the repetitive horizontal features such as the fence and the different boughs of leaves.
So in sum, I'd have to go with the the vertical. Great shot!

Vertical is the stronger image. It starts with the break in the fence and takes you into the woods, then up and out of the picture. At least that's how my eyes flowed through it. | | | |

I'm thinking the the vertical is the strongest composition - the repetitive lines in the vertical make is much stronger. The pattern of lines is broken up by the green leaves to much which probably weakens the image.
