El Capitan is the southernmost peak of the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas. At 8,085 ft, it is the eight tallest peak in Texas. The peak just behind El Capitan is Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas with an elevation of 8,751 ft. Between 1857 and 1861 the Butterfield Overland Mail Company stagecoach crossed the Chihuahuan Desert just below El Capitan, carrying the mail from St. Louis to San Francisco in 22 days. The second photo is the Guadalupe Mountains viewed from the Salt Basin Dunes west of the mountain range. Grady TXhummer2 likes this. |
