Nite shot @ TAMU - 12-05-2011, 09:48 AM

Critique: NC:

I normally shoot insect closeups and macro but, since it's sorta the 'offseason', I'm trying to broaden my horizons.

This is a WA shot from the bonfire memorial here on campus back at the Jack Williams Admin bldg. It's an 8 second exposure @ f/5 with a 28mm Nikkor on a D300.

Any recommendations for making it better? Or any general recommendations on nite photography, in general?

I like the image except for the blown out highlights. Not much you can do about that unless you do composite or HDR. This image screams out to be done in black and white. The graphic content will really sparkle once the muted color is gone. Not sure whether you are a LR user. onOne software used to have some excellent free B/W presets available.

I hope you don't take offense at this because none intended. Here is a quick and dirty split tone of your image done in Lr with a couple of levels adjustments and a slight crop.

The shot looks pretty good to me. The light on the left is slightly distracting but not bad.
Nice work.

I really like this shot, and want to like it even more, but those highlights in the left third keep dragging my eye over there, and my brain says I should be wanting to look toward the Oceanography building. Any chance you could shoot this again and just ever so slightly change your angle? And I also am wondering what this would look like in B&W on silver paper...

Thanks, Michael. Agree re:the lights; this was one of many attempts but the campus is still quite busy this time of night.

Bryce, here is a different crop but it doesn't feel the same.

You're welcome to do a conversion and print us a few copies.

also, maybe try shooting from behind the lighted border thing and get the shadows on the grass with the admin building in the background? That little hill might be too high to get anything interesting, though.

Yes, that berm is just in the wrong place, IMHO. And, the shadow without the light to give them context wouldn't have the same feeling. But, I may try it again.
