B&W attempts - 01-02-2012, 07:19 PM

Critique: CC:

I watched a tutorial on B&W conversions, and now I've made some attempts from some of my shots today. Let me know what you think.

The rest of the set (although not all B&W) can be seen here.

They are pretty cool Audrey.

With the first one, I would have done some clean up work and got rid of that leaf, branch, or whatever that is in the upper right. That distract from the photo once you notice it.

As far as the conversion goes. It looks pretty good. Maybe increase on Red or Green channel on the third one so that the bark of the tree pops out a little more.

All in all, the second shot is my favorite. Your B+W conversion really works with your composition on that image.

Thanks Adrian! It's a piece of spanish moss in #1, and I need to work on my photoshop skills. This was just done in LR, haven't done a conversion to JPEG. Need to attempt some cloning for once (should be fairly easy in this pic).

As for #3, the bark mostly seemed to respond to yellow and oranges (not much green out all these days!), and I had them higher. However, just before exporting, I thought it was too bright. Almost a little glowing. Let me see if I can tweak it some.

Here's more what I was thinking at first. Still not sure how I feel about it.

Not enough dark tones to provide contrast tbh.

At first I wasn't sure because I was leaning into the laptop screen and the image lost contrast. Then the light clicked on in my noggin to back off.LOL The contrast then improved. Our old mentor (Ansel Adams) was a master at contrast in B & W. We all have computers and can manipulate images at will. He had nothing but film. He is the standard by which all can aspire to. Nice job, contrast seems to be the key in B & W. : )
