Star Trails over Palo Duro Canyon - 01-30-2012, 07:57 AM

Critique: CC:

Here's a shot of some star trails over "The Lighthouse" in Palo Duro Canyon. The Lighthouse is about a 3 miles hike one way. Not too bad, but the last 1/10 of a mile or so is really steep and carrying my heavy gear made it that much more of a pain.
But it was hiking back down, another 3 mile hike back....in the dark....by myself.....that was interesting.
5dmk2 - Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 - iso 1250 - stacked shots of 30sec each.

Interesting gear combo, I think the (composite) shot is definitely more than worth the hike.

Very cool! How many shots did you stack? Also, are the lights on the horizon from towns?

I think this was about 35 shots, I just kind of grabbed a handful and threw them in PS.
And yes, that's light pollution on the horizon.

I always like your shots Jake. Thanks for sharing. Can you shed a little light on one thing for me though? Is there a particular reason why you are using a nikon lens on a canon body? Is there something to be gained with that combination or is it more a matter of the equipment that you have?

Just curious

Great Shot!!!!! You and the other photographers here do awesome stuff. If you don’t know about it the Royal Observation Greenwhich does a yearly contest, you should enter some of your shots. Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition 2012.

I was wondering that too. On a movie set they were doing the same thing. I asked why and they said they felt the Nikon lenses were better. I love my Nikon stuff but I have always heard they are pretty much equal with Canon. I also have wondered if the adapter to put a Nikon lens on a Canon body affects quality, minimum focusing distance, ability to focus to infinity etc.. Jake, can you shed some light? Inquiring minds want to know.

The Nikon 14-24 is sharper than my Canon 16-35. But it doesn't take filters so I really only use it for night shots.
My boss here at work owns the Nikon lens so I just borrow it when ever I need it. So the fact that I have access to it is a big factor.

David, I think Nikon zooms are better than Canon zooms from what I've used. Canon primes are outstanding though, not sure how they compare.
The adapter I use allows for infinity focus and doesn't affect the IQ at all.
A lot of video guys like the older Nikon lenses because they have the aperture control on the lens and have smoother focus than the newer Canon lenses.

Beautiful work Jake! I especially love that first one! At least the 3 mile hike (one way) got you a "little" warmer for awhile!
