1st storm chase experience - 02-04-2012, 11:48 AM

Critique: CC:

yesterday we had some storms pop up here in wichita falls,tx and i decided to grab my gear and head out, headed a forming storm off north of waurika, ok and caught a supercell that had signs of rotation.. right place, right time i thought until it was time to high tail it, good thing since as soon as i got in the truck and turned around half dollar size hail started raining down. camera is safe but my truck.. not so much. took a bout 130 shots and only had one i figured i could use. not 100% happy with it but it was my first storm chase, but it was worth every bit for the experience i gained and will do it again. C&C welcome and much appreciative.

thanks,
Chris

Cool shot! I was in that storm last night. It was crazy how dark it got once the storm moved overhead. Luckily I finished driving just in time to get in a building. I did have my camera and snapped a few shots but it was after sunset and so dark I really needed a tripod.

thanks.

that aint no joke. i was at metro photo here in wichita and was looking at the radar with one of the knowledgeables on weather patterns and i high tailed it to get my gear and forgot my tripod in the excitement, rookie mistake. i didnt think it woulda been as bad as it was but you can never underestimate mother nature! i knew i shoulda pulled over when even the news storm chasers turned around lol

Luckily the nasty stuff missed me. I had to meet someone in Decatur and I was watching it the whole way in. I was doing 90 all the way up 287 and got into Braums a few seconds before it hit. I used to live out in the country and I have seen a lot of tornados. This was one of the scariest looking cells I have ever seen. It ended up with nothing more than rain where I was. You just never can tell.

Great shot. Looks like it could have done some damage.

great image, Chris. One minor nit is to straighten up the horizon - seems to be dipping to the right. If you shot this in RAW, then you might be able to pull out a bit more of the details (foreground and the cloud) with a exposure blending processing (i.e. a pseudo HDR)

It is dipping to the right a tad ill fix that amd i shoot everything in raw+jpeg for that reason, just the simple things you sometimes forget. And im one to be a tad scatter brained lol

I just read an article about a popular storm chaser that died in a wreck Saturday. He drove to Tx for this storm and it was his last storm: Tributes pour in for storm-chaser killed in crash | wfaa.com Dallas - Fort Worth
