Thumbs up Big Bend - new book by Parent - 10-16-2006, 02:50 PM

I stumbled across this new landscape photography book while browsing in Barnes and Noble this weekend. Nice conbination of text and photography that I'm certain any Big Bend lover will enjoy. Makes me look forward to a fall trip out there.

I flicked through this at the weekend. Looked pretty good.

They have/had signed copies in Bookpeople at 6th and Lamar

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what equipment he's using?

He uses Linhof and Toyo 4x5 view cameras, or for 35 mm, he uses Olympus OM4T cameras. Most, if not all, his work is done with film. His website says he uses a "Toho" view camera, but that is a typo I believe. Films include Fuji Velvia and Kodak E100VS. For B&W he says normally Kodak Tri X. (Same films in 35mm when that format is used.)

His list of lenses is impressive if you are familar with view camera lenses, including names like Rodenstock, Schneider, and Nikon in a variety of focal lengths.

Howdy All - 10-21-2006, 09:43 PM

Howdy All,

They had an interview with him on NPR last week during lunch, it was very interesting to hear him explain what it takes to get some of his images, one of his images he commented that it took him 12 trips to get the one shot that he was after.

They also talked about how Mexico is trying very hard to get a "Trans-corridor" for animals and sanctuary for species to migrate through.

I think that book will be on my Christmas List.

Thanks for the heads up!!

Thanks for the equipment information. Why didn't I think to look at his web page. Knowing that he uses Velvia is very helpful.

Okay ... this is probably heresy, and all I have to go by is what I see there on that webpage, and I'm sure that Mr. Parent is a great photographer who has taken many of the signature photos of Big Bend, but I've seen better Big Bend pictures here and on Pbase.

John, I suggest you browse the book at a bookstore.
I wouldn't judge it based just on the photos posted on that web page.
