I went there last summer for a week.
Here are my shots. http://xzodus.com/RockyMountainNationalPark/index.htm
email me or send me an IM for any of the locations you see that you like and I will tell ya
what trails you need to take.
I was getting up at 3 am for a couple of my hikes.
Sunrise shots are mandatory since everything faces the east.
I wanted that 15 minutes of red sun at sunrise for certain shots so thats the price I had to pay to get it. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

There is always Maroon Bells. But it is in the Aspen area. This shot gets taken a lot by photographers. there is also Crystal Mill, but it is not a lake scene..... I hope to get to RMNP someday.

Crystal Mill is not too far from Maroon Bells. Makes an interesting shot. One of my favorite shots is by a guy that lives in Colorado "Michael McConnell" http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=3609585

Jay, that certainly is a unique shot of Crystal Mill !! Nothing like seeing an old icon in a "new light". Great concept, well executed.
As McConnell points out, that is one of the most dangerous valleys for avalanches in Colorado. I hope nobody gets themselves killed trying to replicate this shot.

I plan to wear out a few memory cards.
I was up in RMNP last week.
Climbed Twin Sisters (part way) for a sunrise shot of Longs Peak.
Still post-holing through snow most of the way.
No clouds at sunrise - so nothing special, other than warm light.
But the coyote hunting in Moraine Park made up for it.

yeah, that shot is a jaw dropper. He and his friend went to a lot of trouble to get that shot. I talked to him one day on the phone. He said that he would never attempt something like that again. There have been some people killed on that road up there. It is not wide enough for two cars to pass each other on the majority of the way up or down. A man and his wife were in a truck and he tried to get over to give some room to the car coming down. He got to close to edge. As the truck started to go into the canyon, he jumped out. But there was no place for the wife to go and she did not make it. You can still see the truck at the bottom. Quote: |

Jay, that happend on the Schofield Pass jeep trail which comes in from the east.
In fact, the last time I was there, that trail was closed to all vehicles.
The normal access is from the town of Marble. That is much easier. 4WD is recommended, but I see rental cars on it all the time I'm certain that McConnel came in from the Marble side. If the avalanche danger were not so high, the jeep trail from Marble to Crystal would be a great cross country ski.

if you're there on the 20-21 I don't see why we couldn't catch up for dinner or something?
as I said, I'm shooting a horse show both days, so time is limited, but dinner would be fine

I was just going off of what Ron told us. He lives in Marble. We hired him to take us up in his jeep. There was a truck at the bottom but maybe he had his storys mixed up. He did say that he would not try to go across Schofield on an ATV. Said it is that bad. We have a jeep cherokee and I would attempt to go up if I could not find someone to hire. My preferred choice is to get someone like Ron who lives there and is familiar with everything there. Another reason for hiring someone are those rocks that you drive over. Some are really sharp and could cut a tire.............He was telling us that the weekend before we came, there was two photographers shooting crystal mill and a black bear came walking right past them. They said the bear looked at them but kept walking down the trail.
I also heard about a guy in an old suburban or similar with his wife and several kids going off mountain. I heard his brakes went out.
When I went there I was a week too late for the Aspen trees in the fall. Plus a storm had come through two days earlier and blew most of the leaves off. Southern Colorado was perfect though. Quote: |
