First try at a Panoramic... - 06-13-2005, 09:26 PM

thanks to John (aka JKH) for giving me the panoramic bug. i went out and bought a pano setup for my trip to colorado and this was the only pano i managed to get...

11 images shot in portrait with my 20d @ 40mm. final image ended up working out to be like 44.6 megapixels and it covered about 110 degrees field of view.

Sprague Lake
Rocky Mountain National Park

here are some 100% crops:

the crops are taken from the far left and right side of the image. if u look close in the main image u can see the little areas that these came from..

im very anxious to get out and shoot again... hopefully john can teach me some more ins and outs of pano photography!

Very impressive shot, and seeing the 100% crops really gives an idea of just how much resolution you've captured. What did you use for stitching? Do you think the Nodal Ninja was a worthwhile purchase.

I've actually been considering the Really Right Stuff setup for convenience since I'm already invested in arca-swiss stuff but it's pretty expensive so I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm definitely going to get something before our next vacation though.

i think the nodal ninja was definitely work it... it was a little over $100...

the RRS version is about $405 in order to rotate along both axis. ouch

i have RRS plates and ballhead etc and still opted for the nodal ninja as an inexpensive alternative...

i also shot with the vertical grip attached to my camera. the guys at nodal ninja said it wouldnt work weight and geometry wise but i rigged it to work. i had to invert the horizontal arm in order to give me the length i needed in order to line the center of the lens up with the rotation point.

nodal ninja is releasing a new version very soon so im curious to see how that looks. whats cool is that they offer an upgrade kit to first generation owners so ill be looking for it.

i bought a Kaidan 3 point leveler at a camera shop in boulder. it was on sale for $59 i think and u can tell its been there for awhile... it came in VERY handy. its not picutred in the above pics but heres one below.

kaidan on the right:

Too bad you didn't have any good scenery to try out a pano on.

After this, why did you return to Houston?

Seriously, very nice first effort. Keep 'em coming. :)

Abel,

Thanks for the info on the Nodal Ninja, I'll keep an eye out for their new release.

For stitching, did you do it manually, or using PS's PhotoMerge or some other application?

Abel,

Great job stitching - especially on a first atttempt!

For this shot, I would not have included such a wide field of view. For me, all the trees along the shorline don't add that much interest. Just a matter of personal taste. Did you try a sequence with a 100mm or 200mm focal length?

software i used PTAssembler... ill look for the link in a sec...

as far as longer lengths, i wasnt sure if the NodalNinja could carry much more weight.... i have a 100 macro thats fairly light but i knew my 70-200 f2.8 was a no-go...

i do have a 50mm that im gonna try locally here in town. those shots prolly wont need something as long as a 200mm

thanks....
