Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Gallery - 04-16-2009, 01:24 PM

Here is a new gallery I have started on the Wichita Mountains. It is beginning to get too snakey to be hiking by myself. I would love to go with other photographers interested in this park. I try to go at least three times each month (Only live 70 miles away) Email me and will try to hook up, my email is on the new gallery site. I am discovering a lot of shots that are off the roads. We are getting a little rain now, so maybe more wildflowers and leaves on the trees by the 9th. Also on the weekends it a great time for taking shot in the narrows of rock climbing. Bill

Excellent. I used to go up there at least once a month. But i havent been in about 2 years. If we're able to meet up, perhaps you can show me some off the beaten path locations.

Rick I took the heart rock idea from you and added my twist. You might notice that my sweetheart has my beard! Also, I like the snake shot...is it a copperhead? That is why I am wearing snake gaiters. We need to meet up and hike this spring. Maybe after this rain the post oak falls will have a little water. Bill

Scott... you won't regret checkign it out at all. The W.Mountains and Medicine Park are an amazing haven for photographers looking to shoot something other than flat prairie land.

Bill if you wanna go up there sometime just drop a line. I'm always up for some getting lost in the Narrows.

Guys, I work nightshift so I can go nearly any day(just miss a little sleep) I'm going next Monday afternoon, to take a shot of the Pear and Apple. The sun should be in the correct angle around 4:oo. Jason, As for the Narrows the best time I think is any weekend when the rock climbers are there. One day I am going to hike up to Pennington mine coming from what is known as Burma Road, instead of going down from Boulder. Scott , great shots with the macro . I need one. Also Scott I think you would love the Wichitas... it seems you like wildlife photography and this is the place to be. The other day I walked up on a river otter (I was without my camera) this was the first I have seen not on TV. I am still waiting for my first Elk. We do need to meet up and have a Meers Burger.

Nice shots Bill. Makes me want to go and wander around. It's been several years since I've been to the Wichita Mountains. I'm going to have to make time to go again. Yep, those Meers burgers are great! Unlike Tom, I will walk a bit further than 100 yards from the truck for a shot, but I don't climb big rocks while carrying a big camera!! Falls tend to hurt the camera!

What You mean I have to get out of my car to get those kinda photos? Well count me out then. If I can not stand on pavement then I am not in. LOL Well I do not like to hike too fare but am working on getting in better shape to be able to go farther, but like lexie I am not much of a climber.

You can drive up Mt. Scott with a view on a good day of 50 to 60 miles, the fawn, buffaloes and longhorns pics were taken from my car, and I walked 10 ft for the praire dogs. But some of the landscapes were hiking in the charon wilderness area. I should not be doing this alone. One of the climbers told me he was bit in 1990's by a diamondback and would have had a hard time getting back without his climbing partner. There is also a plaque honoring a doctor from the Dallas area that was killed while hiking alone and fell around Elk Mountain. Maybe someone knows the story better than I do? I have slipped a couple of time while holding my D70 but then I also want a D90 or 300. But you can not use the excuse about 100 ft from the truck....it want work. Most people never get out of the car except to go to the visitor center. So lets go.
