The beauty of the beauty dish with a grid - 11-21-2009, 11:30 PM

Here is an image from today. The key light is produced by a gridded beauty dish, which produces this beautiful shadow around her neck and doesn't spill light all over the model. The other interesting aspect is the use of rim lights on each side, as I wanted to have some control of where the rim highlights would be. So lots of lights, but the effect is pretty simple, and hopefully does not appear over-lit.

Thanks, Nino. This is a Paul Buff white beauty dish. I don't recommend a silver beauty dish, too much contrast in my opinion.

P.S. I just checked their website and it seems that the older white regular beauty dish is not listed, only the silver high efficiency one. Weird. You may want to give them a call.

Looks good. I've had a speedotron dish for years and love it. I also want one for my Profoto gear, but haven't been able to convince myself that the expense is worth it. I wonder if there's a way to mod the paul buff and make it fit profoto gear? Because $80 is a lot easier to accept than $350.

The boom is an inexpensive Amvona one, made of aluminum. It works ok but it won't last forever. About the beauty dish mod profoto heads, I have no idea if this is possible, but you are welcome to stop by with the head and take a look at the beauty dish mount.

Thanks for the comments!

I forgot to say that I picked up the boom at eBay.

Nice Setup, nice pics of an exotically gorgeous lady. You did her very well.

Nino, thanks for the update, I am glad that PCB is bringing the classic beauty dish back with a better design.

Osy, thanks for the comment. Yes, this model is really beautiful and lots of fun to work with.
