So I got a 40D the other day and flipping through the menus I see "flash control" or whatever. I remember people saying you can control the flash settings in camera on the newer bodies. But the sub-menus don't work because I don't have a flash hooked up.
I hook up my 580EX (First Gen) and the sub menus still don't work because "flash is not connected or is not supported" or something like that.
Can you control a 580EXI in camera, or a 430EXI for that matter?
Sorry if this is an old subject but the 40D is new to me :) | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. SIGN UP today and help support our community.

go to the canon support site: Support - Canon USA Consumer Products
go into the 40D section into the drivers and downloads. Upgrade the firmware if it hasnt been yet.
Also download the manual.
You should not have problems with that body and flash.
It works just fine with my XSi and with a 40D that I have borrowed before from a friend.

Its not a camera limitation its the flash. Only the newer 580exII and 430exII can allow a camera to control the flash. Its not an option with the exI.

The controls on the 580 are pretty quick and easy to use. For what it's worth I haven't felt any need to upgrade mine.

I agree about the upgrade. The one thing I love on the II is the lock switch.

The lock switch is very nice compared to the old twist-on type. I also like the stroboscopic feature, but I've not had a good reason to play with it.
