Finally had the shoot. You all were lots of help - thank you so much. Original thread here:

http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum...-outdoors.html

Friday night I shot outside w/ my AB-800 and Vagabond II (nice - love it). I still need lots of help. I had the standard reflector, a 32" umbrella and a 20 degree grid. My shots looked pretty good on the LCD but on my computer were too dark. Fortunately I shot RAW. :)

Here are some of my favorite shots - first the outdoor then the indoor. Please give me some feedback - I need lots of help....

Please give me some feedback on lighting, posing and anything else you like. All Post was done in Lightroom.

You can see all of them here if you wish:

Thanks all,

John

There's a bit more noise than I like but this may suit your purpose well.
I've learned to only use the LCD view to check focus and composition and NEVER judge exposure by it. The LCD view is always an optimized view. Using the histogram is the only way to know if your exposure is within limits.

The noise is due to underexposure.

I like the images and assume you satisfied the shooting plan for a CD cover for this musician.

Thank you. Some of the noise may actually be grain which I added. I told him I would try different stuff and let him pick the effect he likes from all the shots. I do like grain - of course I go back to using 1600 B&W film and loved it..... thanks for the info on the LCD - yes I need to start using the histogram more - live and learn they say...

Thanks,

John

I think these are all very good, but if I had to narrow it down, I'd have to say 2 and 3 are my favorites with #3 being on top. I seem to get a real sense of feeling from that #3 shot. I see a tired jazz musician perhaps after a long night on stage.

I like the pose of 4 and 5 where he is in front of the wine bottles, but it also seems to be a bit of a 'busy' background and takes my eye away from the subject. Perhaps if there was a little bit more separation using DOF to blur the background more.

Whoa, Schneeblie! You did good! I especially liked 1.2.4 and 5.

BTW, what's the origin of the name? Sounds a bit like Sweizerdeutsch.

I like them all. The second image is great, but the black&whites really suit the style.

+1 on the LCD being a liar and a cheat. Checking focus is more possible with the newer hi-res screens, but because you can set the brightness of the screens, they aren't real helpful for exposure.

Good job with the lighting! The black and white really works here. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much.... funny thing about the name - that was the name of Jack Black's character on School of Rock (movie). I called my son that when he was very young (and still do - he's 6). It's not my last name but loved the sound of it... kind of catchy and of course - it's most likely not taken on forums....
