Pocket Wizard to control SB 800 and SB 600 ? - 02-21-2010, 08:01 AM

Please tell if this is possible,
and in plain English how to set up the flash units ( Thanks ) :

Nikon D3 with Pocket Wizard as transmitter in hot shoe ( to fire )
Nikon Speedlight SB 800 with a Pocket Wizard as receiver
Nikon SB 800 to fire Nikon SB 600 through wireless Nikon system.

So in effect controlling 2 remote flashes.

Am I crazy ?

Jack,

As I understand what you are trying to do... you want to utilize the PW to fire your SB800 in commander mode so you can utilize the Nikon CLS to fire the SB600? The way you want to do this will not work with the CLS (as it needs information from the camera which is not conveyed via the PW) so you will need to be in manual mode when using the PW's. You can however hook up the SB600 to a PW by utilizing a "hotshoe synch cord" so that you can fire it with the same PW transmitter (on camera) you are using as the transmitter.

So in essence you have:

D3 with PW transmitter.
SB800 with PW receiver
SB600 with Hotshoe synch cord to PW receiver.

SB600 and 800 are in manual modes.

You can get a hotshoe synch cord at Flash Zebra, B&H, etc... or use Nikon's SU4 which is much more expensive.

Yes, you are crazy as it won't work. If you have two flashes and only two PWs, the easiest thing to do would be use the SU-4 mode of the SB800 and have the SB-600 triggered by the PW with an adapter.

So one PW on the camera, one on the SB-600 with an sync port adapter, and the SB-800 in SU-4 in manual mode.

Alternatively, on PWE on the camera, one on the SB-800 in manual mode, and one optical trigger on the SB-600.

Either way you have to buy an adapter, either a sync jack adapter or an optical slave for the SB-600. Both are pretty inexpensive.

Good luck!

Just got the Flash Zebra adapter, connected to my SB 600, set my SB 800 to SU 4 and every thing works remotely via PK's

Thanks for the help.
