Photographic Light Meter Question - 03-03-2010, 10:21 PM

I know absolutely nothing about light meters, and to be honest the thought of one has never, ever, crossed my mind. Until now.

I have a need to do some light surveys with where I work, and am thinking that I might kill 2 birds with one stone.

Will photographic light meters also tell you ambient light readings in LUX.

I need to ensure my work sites have a minimum of 300 lux as defined by IESNA. I am confident that my work sites are there, but I need to be able to prove this to one of my customers.

If they can display ambient light readings in LUX. Which one would your recommend?

Thanks in advance,
Duke

Older Light meters had a lux scale. I haven't seen one lately that reads in lux. The only people that still use lux readings would be movie makers and OSHA. But any meter should be able to give you a reading that can be converted to lux. Do a Google search for a lux conversion table.

Here is my original well thought out answer below:

If Don were online He might have something similiar to say?

Thanks... Heading over to Google now.

EDIT: OK, went to Google, found numerous conversion charts. But.......... Not for me, I think.

My work sites are lit by Metal Halide and from I can find they are rated at lumens per watt. Which is not easy for me to convert to one of the online conversion charts.

Regardless, the way that I know this one particular operator, they are going to want me to be able to validate my response to them, with some sort of physical measurement.

Looks like the Sekonic L-758Cine might be able to do it... Trying to find some photos of the LCD screen or videos now. Thanks for the tip on Movie Makers / Cinematographers.

Anyone here have a Sekonic meter?

I may be a day late (and after recent purchases I'm definitely a dollar short) but even the lowly Sekonic 308S measures EV and there's a handy-dandy conversion table on page 19 of the manual to go from EV to LUX:

Thanks guys. Ended up getting a idiot resistant, dedicated lux meter from one of my industrial hygiene suppliers.
