is it though? some seriously harsh light, just use one of those cigarette lighter flood lights!

That would not be very nice to your subject. A 2,000,000 candle power spotlight could do some serious damage to the human eye... and I'm sure your subjects would not look very good squinting at the camera. This dish will be a lot more even and the flash duration is very short.
