I am looking for a lighting setup. I would be doing half indoor. Half out. I am looking at a strobist setup but can be convinced otherwise. I am only looking for a few to start then grow. I was thinking a soft box and couple umbrellas but still would love everyones advice. Thanks ahead of time, I've been browsing BH and adorama and mpex which have a few sets of umbrellas w/ or w/+ flahes included. If I went with a strobist setup would you use a few sb600 or less pricey model?

What is your budget? How serious do you want to get in the future?

If you went the strobist way and didn't need to use the Nikon CLS, you could go with less expensive Vivitar 285's or there new series that have built in slave syncs. This would be a full manual set up.

There's a great article here by Joe Farace, that might help:

Assembling A Small Location Lighting Kit from Adorama Learning Center

If you can't find exactly the answers you are looking for at the Adorama Learning Center, you might be interested in the series of podcasts where Jack Howard & Mason Resnick answer reader questions about gear, various photography techniques etc etc.

In ask Adorama #13, for example, Jack and Mason build a location light kit on an $800 budget: Ask Adorama #13 from Adorama Learning Center

You can also send your own queries to ask@adorama.com: any Questioners selected for the podcast receive a small participation gift: eg a small camera bag/a book/a small gift certificate etc.
