Well, I finally took the plunge, and ordered a transmitter and 2 RF 602 receivers from Yongnuo. They are more expen$ive, but do offer a 1-year warranty.
Worth a bit more, I think. The other sellers give a whole 30 days. wow
Shipping was fast, but they only sent one of the receivers I ordered, so now, I am waiting for them to resolve the problem.
I opened the box, and my first impression was; "These things are small!"
The receiver battery door takes some working with. A minor hindrance.
The instruction manual is also small, but has good information, if a bit hard to decipher in places.
"When use transmitter, please don't touch metal contactor of transmitter so as to avoid mistake." Huh? What shouldn't I touch??
And:
"With no special use transmitter, without the function of waking-up."
"This product don't support SB-600 flashgun."
I assume that refers to the articles I have read, which state that the "wake up" from "standby" function of the SB 600 can't be activated by the transmitter.
Noooo problemo! I shut off the standby function, mounted the SB-600 on the receiver, and it operated flawlessly. Power up; power down, 100 %; fully adjustable for conditions. SB 800 and 900s don't seem to have the same problems, tho.
The transmitter hot shoe fits the camera very well...not tight, but snug enough so that I had no worries about it coming loose. The same can be said for the flash-to-receiver fit, even without Nikon's marvelous locking mechanism. Very secure!
The transmitter foot fits all 3 of my small flash stands very loosely, which argues for gaffer tape, or mounting it with shoe mounts that have some sort of clamping device...or being vewwy, vewwy careful!
I tried them for distance...22 long paces across my front yard, and maybe 15 feet around the corner of a shed, without a problem. I expect the distance resuts to be about what has been posted on other sites...adequate for all but the most extreme needs. 100 meters? Nice, but I won't use that much distance. Or maybe I will, now that I can. Hmmmm....
It operated my Sunpak 433D and 383 flashes flawlessly, but my old Sunpak 355 and 2800 Digiflash would not work. The 2800 does work well on my camera, so it is a great back-up. I have wanted to try the Yongnuo "Strobist" flashes for some time now. Besides, 2 flashes are all I need for strobiste stuff, anyway.
My testing is admittedly neither extensive or professional, and I can't comment on build quality, other than to say the units appear to be well-constructed. I have the impression these are good accessories, and will serve my modest needs for the future. At this point, I think they represent money well spent.

I just bought the same ones and am actually impressed at the build quality considering the price. I think it was around $85 for transmitter and four receivers. I wanted these so they'd work with either my flashes, or my monolights, or a mixture of both I suppose if I want. | | | |

A bit of an update:
Yongnuo sent my second RF 602 receiver, and it was DOA, even after changing batteries. I guess they may have some QC problems. So, now I have returned the inoperable unit, and requested a refund for that receiver only. I'll use the one that works, and optical slave my other flashes. Should work fine.
Good, pleasant service, and shipping about as rapid as you could expect fromn the far side of the world.
I think the lesson here is that the units sometimes don't work, and it might be more timely, not to say easier to send defective units back, if you buy through some place like Amazon, where their sellers have agreements regarding returns.
