Jianisi triggers and Vivitar 285HV - 11-22-2010, 01:19 AM

I was wondering what you guys though of this set up as a beginning set up for a flash?

Amazon.com: Vivitar 285HV Auto Professional Flash: Camera & Photo

Amazon.com: YN PT-04 TM 4 Channel Wireless Hot Shoe Flash Trigger & Receiver Set for Canon EOS, Nikon, Olympus & Pentax Flashes: Camera & Photo

I was also wondering if it is possible to use the vivitar 285HV directly on the hotshoe on my camera body?

Are jianisi triggers OK or should I go with like those cowboy studio triggers?

Amazon.com: Cowboystudio UNPT-04 4 Channel Wireless Hot Shoe Flash Trigger Receiver with Umbrella Holder for Canon EOS, Nikon, Olympus & Pentax Flashes Other products by cowboystudio: Camera & Photo

Amazon.com: CowboyStudio 16-channel Wireless radio remote trigger for studio strobe monolight, use with Nikon, Canon SLR camera: Camera & Photo

I am going to get this as a cheap umbrella flash set up

Amazon.com: CowboyStudio Strobist Kit Photography Photo Studio Flash Mount Umbrellas Kit: Camera & Photo

After trying several triggers and the below link are the ones I finally liked the best out of all the cheaper brands. I'm also using a mixture of different flashes and think that Vivitar is a tank.

Right now I have a Sigma EF-530 Super, Nikon SB-600, Nikon SB-24, and Vivitar 283 and the below triggers. I picked up a set off of Amazon that had a total of 4 receivers and one trasmitter.

Amazon.com: Yongnuo 2.4GHz Wireless Flash Trigger/Receiver and Shutter Remote for Canon 1D/5D/7D/10D/20D/30D/40D/50D DSLR: Electronics

I tested my Vivitar 285HV. It has a trigger voltage of 4.7 volts.

I spoke with Olympus with regard to using it on my E-500 and E-520. Oly told me as long as the trigger voltage was un der 6 volts there would be no problem.

I use 4 285's for most of what we light up, they work well, not fancy, just work

The 285 has been manufactured for many years. The new models are low voltage, but some of the older ones are pretty high.

You can check your flash with a voltmeter. Off camera, turn on the flash, when the 'ready' is on, use a voltmeter to measure the voltage at the foot.

I ran across this webpage about flash voltage, nice for reference:
