Durable, metal?, heavy duty umbrella + flash holder? - 11-26-2010, 11:01 PM

I have bought this umbrella holder recently:

Umbrella Flash lightstand mounting bracket HAMA New - eBay (item 110604689649 end time Nov-27-10 15:40:00 PST)

Because its cheap material it broke where it mounts onto my lightstand. I have looked around and I couldn't find a metal/heavy duty one which can hold my umbrella and flash securely. I have a big umbrella. Do you know a metal umbrella holder which can hold my flash and which doesn't brake easily?

Thanks!

(disclaimer also, I bought two of the Impact branded plastic swivels a few years ago, and they're doing just fine and I've easily overloaded them beyond reason with potato-masher flashes, ridiculous modifiers and whatnots, the stand is more likely to fall over before I break the mount)

I own the manfrotto, I also have a cowboystudio version which is also metal. I highly recommend the Manfrotto, it's solid and tightens and loosens very smoothly. The CB version has cheap knobs that are hard to tighten and the umbrella hole is a bit too big. but my favorite is the cheetahstand speedlight adapter it allows you to attach all kinds of modifiers and is high quality and built like a tank.

This is my travel strobist rig

SB900 powered by SD8A on 36 inch JTL stand with 24 inch Westscott umbrella.

I use this setup for travel because it fits in my suitcase

I use this setup on my full size stands also, but this image shows the adapter best.

ballhead - Manfrotto Lite Tite
Swivel+Umbrella Adapter 26
coldshoe - Stroboframe Shoe-type Flash Mount Cat. No 300-SHO

Layed out flash example:

One additional advantage I found with the ballhead set is the ability to quickly rotate the flash body to align the IR sensor to face the camera.

Thats a cool idea to use the ballhead with the manfrotto I have a ballhead that came with a beauty dish that I bought. The beauty dish was too heavy to be supported by the ballhead and I ended up tossing it in my bag and never thought about it since. I like the extra reach with the umbrella, nice and simple too thanks!

I have two PhotoFlex Grip Swivels and have on occassion used my PhotoFlex 4x6 Foot Softbox as well as my PhotoFlex 7 Foot Octadome and they handle the payload with ABSOLUTELY no problems..... And it cost less than the one that you paid for
