Help setting up external flash stand. - 01-05-2011, 01:47 PM

Hello all, I just bought a external flash stand and I need help on finding the right "adapter" to connect my flash (580exII) to the stand. Also, I was thinking of buying the pocket wizard plus II for my wireless trigger. Would I need two pocket wizard? One for the camera and the other for the external flash?

I'm a newbie and wanted to learn about external flash light. Thanks!

There are a ton of different options available for putting a camera mounted flash on top of a light stand. What you want will be as much personal preference as anything.

If you have the little foot that came with your 580 (should be in the soft case) then that has a threaded mount point on its base. You can use that for starters

Is it going to be a bit more expensive, but I have found that a Justin Clamp is the best, most versatile way to mount speedlights.

You can screw it in to the light stand and use it as a cold shoe.
You can clamp it to a light stand, pole or just about anything else and put a flash in a great spot.
You can run an umbrella through it.

Absolutely wonderful piece of equipment.

just a question... are you still shooting with a D300s? If you are, why did you go with a 580exII?

EDIT: nm, just saw your old buy/sell posting.

I use products from cheetahstand.com to mount my flashes to the light stand and attach modifiers like softboxes and beauty dishes. Works great. They have a good set of triggers and receivers for $60 too.

search for "umbrella swivel" . Get manfrotto one. Plastic ones will break after a bit.

Yes. You need trigger and receiver. Therefore - 2 units. Also you will need way to hook to flash. Which is either hotshoe to minijack or pc-to-minijack if you have latest version of Canon flash (cheaper)
