I actually forgot about that link. When you're up during the wee hours of the morning searching, you just loose all sense of reality!

Quadra's are nice, and tight. But after a little bit you will realize that they are too small for what you need . Actual assymetrical spread from single battery is way better than dragging two batteries. B/c honestly - 400W is not enough to nuke direct sunight anyway for anything but face portrait.

100@16. If you lucky you could do 250@11. You do math how much you get, when you trying to shoot it in bright light, specially if you got modifier with couple of layers on. (those who shoot on 200 are just going to have to use NDs..).

You still pretty much restricted to shadows. So assymetrical spread is just more ergonomical if you do location shoot.

Anyway.. normal curve will be
got it. love it. dissapointed. accepting limitations. using it ;)

(and looking for more powerful light while at it)

Thanks for that information but I do not plan on nuking the sun. Very seldom do I shoot into the direct sun, just casual portraits that's all. I have an Einstein 640 watt, plus 3 sb900 to use if I need more power. I purcahsed them for "the small size" so I believe that they will in fact satisfy my needs.

:) So by throwing it all into picture with Quadra you may be able to get roughly 1.5 more stops ;)

I'm still trying to decide between this and the Ranger. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Depends on your carrying capacity. Ranger is .. quite heavy. Its much much much more versatile, but you will need stronger stands b/c you modifiers will become more funky. Also for ranger you will need to buy reciever (cant remember about latest ones though) - that is INCREDIBLY easy to loose when shooting on location. Quadras got built-in system.

It was an weight option that was the deciding factor for me. If you decide on the Quadra make sure that you buy the adapter for soft boxes now, because it is out of stock every where that I have looked.

I nearly always have an assistant when using my lights. Right now, I have a monoblock and a vagabond II, so not much difference in weight. I throw everything on a C-Stand with rollers.

ewww.. vagabond is .. ugh.

Then i'd say look around for rangers - they do pop up. I got mine used from a great guy (threw in couple of things i'd pay extra for..so i basically got two head kit and extra cable for price of one head kit) after 1.5 years with Quadras and using both, but Rangers are the ones i am using when i know there will be too much light around. 1100 assymetrical power - fantastic.

Also you will have no more issues with color balance ever - no matter which route you go with Elinca. I hate ABs for that.

But i kid you not - if you want remote adjustments with Ranger - do something about that reciever.. I had mine lost+found so many times in the field that its scary.. its black - so spotting it SO MUCH FUN (i am going to repaint it into bright orange, i think)

I actually already have a set of EL Skyports. I am using the EL D-Lite 400, right now. Color is great. I also have the 27" beauty dish, 53" Rotalux octo and 39" seep throat. So definitely getting a EL set.

Should be good then.

As of Quadra->Ranger adapter - i got one, its doesnt make life MUCH better.. B/c whatever you need it for - is going to be too big and thus portability will be compromised plus it will be flying away with wee wiff of the wind.

But its useful if you really like to use something and got heavy stand to support things.

Altough with D-lites you already got testing ground ;)

(Ranger takes different adapter and receiver if you need adjusting capabilities. If not - you should be ok with generic skyport receiver and cable they throw into reciever-transmitter kit.. )

So you have the Ranger Quadra Adapter? The adapter is specifically designed for the lights stated on the first page of this thread and is no larger than the standard 5mm reflector included with the kit.
You may be thinking of another item.
Happy Shooting

There is only one "ranger quadra adapter". One that you use in situ of refular reflector , and other end is designed to accept Elinca bayonet/mount modifiers.
