Hair Light Question - 03-09-2011, 01:55 PM

Hi All... hoping for some help here. I am doing a family shoot indoors, formal pics. They all have really dark hair and I will likely use a black backdrop. I don't have a hair light! Are there any suggestions for what I could do so that the hair doesn't blend into the background?

The setup I would typically use:
Key light (with umbrella) in behind camera.
Fill light (with umbrella) to the right/slightly in front of subject.
- I only own two strobes/umbrellas. I also have a SB-600 flash for my camera. I guess I could use it as a hair light? But I don't have a tripod.

I was thinking of purchasing this as it is cheap, but don't know how well it will work: CowboyStudio Photography Lighting | Studio Equipment | Studio Accessories

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

a hair light is basically just something that will give you a slight highlight and some separation from your background so the SB600 would work no problem. I have used TAPE at times to put my speedlites on the ceiling so tripods or booms arent always needed. you can also always buy a jacobs clip to attach the flash to your background horizontal bar and shoot it down at a angle.

I personally use my alien bee ring light with a grid for a hair light.

Just use a VAL with that SB600.
Easy peasy.

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely give those options a try.
