Ebay triggers question for Canon users - 03-13-2011, 02:20 PM

I have the Yongnuo triggers/receivers (RF-602 I think). Is there a way for me to get some kind of adapter for it so I can use the trigger AND a flash on the camera?

I mean besides buying a Cactus V5 :)

It depends on WHAT triggers you have. I have a set of EBAY triggers that I use which allow me to tap into the sync port of the camera and plug it in to my trigger while using my flash on camera. Have I used it this way, no. Anytime I have a flash OFF CAMERA, I use it in manual mode.

I Have a canon 580EXII and a 550EX then 4 YN-560 CHEAP flashes and these were the best purchase I have made. They cost me $60 a piece and are somewhere between the 580EXII and 550EX in light output. I can throw these bad boys ANYWHERE and not really worry about them getting damaged because they were SO cheap. Go ahead, steal my YN-560, Id rather spend another $60 on one then $400ish for a 580EXII.

I will take my YN's put it on 1/4 power, bungee cord them, tape, WHATEVER around the dance floor of a wedding and bingo, great results. It lifts the ambient light slightly and doesn't kill the DJ lights so you can see they are actually dancing and it doesn't look like they are seizing. I then use my camera on flash in E-TTL with NO problems.

Heck, I even have 4 of those cheap battery packs too and I think my batteries cost just as much as the packs do. WORTH the money! Yes, they are NOT the high voltage packs like a real Canon but they work GREAT!!

NOOOOOOOOOOW, before you think that Im just a cheap-o, well I am but when it comes to my photography gear I am FAR from that. I have quite a collection of goodies that are top notch but when it comes to certain things, I dont have a problem going cheap. I use the EBAY triggers because I have not found a reason to have anything better right now. They work for me, never missed a shot with them and Ive used them for two years.

So back to your point, What are you trying to trigger remotely? Will an optical slave NOT work for what you need?

They are Yongnuo RF-602 for Canon (although I don't think the brand matters as long as the camera has a hotshoe).

I want to have both on and off-camera flash but the YN trigger hasn't got a hot shoe on it.

Being very green at working with flash, I don't know what to search for to figure out what I need to do what I want.

Are you using hot shoe flashes or strobes externally?

How many flashes, strobes are going to be used at once?

What will you be shooting???

90% of the time, you will not want to use the on camera flash unless you have a bracket for it. You better off using your triggers with the flash in manual mode.

I made a huge mistake and started shooting with off camera strobes with multiple strobes at first. I started with three lights and this made it very difficult but I did get it down pretty quick. I should of started with one light and Im sure I would of caught on quicker. You will be VERY amazed what one light can do for you and how easy it is with some ambient light also. The key is dragging the shutter at times so you need a steady hand and a subject that is stiff. The OneLight Workshop by Zack Arias is a GREAT place to start. I really like this guys style and his DVD.
