Black backdrops... vinyl? muslin? paper? - 03-21-2011, 11:06 AM

for the last several years I've been using white paper and black muslin backdrops. I've been happy with using paper for the white backdrop, but the black muslim is a pain in the arse...

has anyone tried using black vinyl? any links to where you buy it? how durable? any unedited shots I could see?

just spending too much time in post cleaning up ugly wrinkled black muslin that has gradually faded to dark grey. thanks in advance!

Heather:

What are you shooting? If you're looking for true black, then vinyl is the wrong choice: it's very difficult to light for uniformity. A great true black is velvet. It absorbs light well, lights evenly and is pliable.

If you're shooting products, then velvet is a great option. It gets more tricky if you're shooting people.

Do you need to move it a lot? If not, buy some lanolym and paint the back side a flat black. Works GREAT for white :)

I have the black from Denny's that shoots true black. it's like a felt. although it shoots true black and washes easily...that blankety blank white dog hair is about to make me lose my mind. If it weren't for that I would highly recommend it..
