Should i upgrade my flash - 04-08-2011, 10:07 AM

Ok so recently i bought a SB800 from a TPF member (smooth sale) and it was about two months ago. Im new at using flashes off camera but i like what im getting out of it and hope to get better. So far just using a flash slave and the extension cord from nikon. Well yesterday one of my employees who also shoots offered to sell his SB900 that he used only once for $300 bucks.

Should i upgrade and sell my SB800 or will these work well together if i want multiple flashes? Also is that a steal of a price that i should jump on even if im not in a rush or do they usually go for that used.

Yes, that is a heck of a deal on a used-once SB-900!

These will work great together for multiuple flash use. Use the SB-900 as commander and it will let you control the SB-800 line-of-sight off-camera. You can adjust the 800's levels from the 900 and with your TTL cord you can have two off-camera flashes.

You can use both off camera using the CLS system, the D90 can be used as a commander with its built-in pop up flash. $300 for a SB900 with all accessories is a good deal

Yeah, good point, Ken. I did not even think about what camera he had.

You don't need the TTL cable at all unless you can't get line-of-sight on one of the flashes. You can trigger both of them from the built-in flash althought I don't know if the D90 will allow you to have multiple channels of flashes at different +/- EV.

You should check out Joe McNally's book "The Hot Shoe Diaries"
He specifically includes sections on how to use Nikon CLS with TTL using SB800 and SB900s. There's an appendix that shows you in simple terms and photos how to set the flashes and camera. Again though.. you could read the manual too.
