Highlight Tone Priority?? - 04-26-2011, 10:06 AM

So I went to a Canon workshop to brush up on some skills..(won't do that again!!) But I did learn one thing...highlight tone Priority. It only comes on certain cameras but," it is useful in scenes with contrasted lighting or scenes with whites or light colors in parts of the image, such as a bride in a white wedding dress or a white house."

Am I the only one that has never heard of this?? I figured wedding people would be the first to know about this...

I haven't looked into it extensively. It's on my 40D (I think this may have been the first model to introduce it on). I think it mainly saves highlights from being blown out so easily. One thing I don't like about it is the lowest ISO is 200 when using this option. That said, I usually leave it off.

The HTP setting does just what Sam said above, Renae. If you can live without iso200 and perhaps with some noise in the shadows, it seems like a good deal. I recently enabled it and without a lot of really involved study it appears to give me better cloud details for example. White wedding dresses, white flowers: these are common test subjects that I've seen compared on the www. Most reviewers seem to view it quite favorably.

Here's more:
Canon EOS 40D - Complete Review - A hand's on assessment of the new Canon EOS 40D

and note that this is the 1st place i've found that specifically mentions HTP as enabled in RAW. My original belief (and commonly held on the www, too) is that HTP only affects shooting in JPG. According to the above and my very limited experience, it evidently affects RAW as well as in-camera JPG.

One more time........Wayne didn't know. Are you keeping score?

R2D2 has it. I found it. I couldn't figure out what it did. Discovered the ASA 200 bottom limit. Turned it off.

I suppose I should file it away for future use. Like Easter Sunday morning when I was using ASA 800. Assuming I can find it again.

an update: I'm leaving it on all the the time now. Noise in iso200 is non-existent, and I really do see better detail in those fluffy white clouds. And yes, I'm shooting in RAW (Canon 50d).

Maybe it's just in my head, but that's such a wonderful place to be.....

What I recently found a bit about the HTP that said that it was reducing the exposure by lowering the ISO sensitivity
. Which makes since, given that when HTP is enabled ISO 100 is no longer available.

Might be a rainy day project to prove or disprove. . . if it ever rains.

I used it a good bit when shootng eagles as it did help with the white crown details. I have since also used it with the various white colored egrets, especially when shootin BIF where at times the exposure needs get variable.

Now that Leon has resurrected this, I will say that I have been continuing to use it, and I firmly believe the cloud details are much, much better even in RAW. And if there is a measurable issue with 100-vs-200 ISO, I'm not seeing it.
