Going to Qatar for 2 years. Want to bring 2 AB400 to get pictures of my boys while I am there. I need a small set up. I have always used a soft box and umbrella. Could I do the same thing with 2 umbrellas or would you recommend getting a small soft box?

Also anyone have experience with a step up/step down convertor?

The advantage of the softbox is control of the light spill. That said, umbrellas are one of the most versatile modifiers you can have and use. In a pinch I have even used an umbrella as a reflector.

Not sure if you already have the AB's, if so ignore this part...If you really want to save space, try looking at some quantum Q Flashes. The q flash, although not as powerful, should work for most everything you can do with the AB's...as the AB's will be inadequate for bright sun outdoor applications (at least if your trying to overpower the sun).

Almost forgot, nothing to big too worry about on the converter so long as it will cover the rated amperage of what your working with....
