having the light right next to the model also makes it a lot easier to black out the background.

Not only having the light close to the model, but having the model far away from, rather than close to, the backdrop.

The more distance you can achieve between elements,the more control you have of lighting them individually. Use a long lens zoomed in to compress the field of view and complete the illusion for the final shot that everything is happening in a tight space.
