Stupid flash question

This is a discussion on Stupid flash question within the Lighting Discussion forums, part of the Photography Information category; But what does i-TTL mean? I know it has something to do with the way the flash and the camera ...

But what does i-TTL mean? I know it has something to do with the way the flash and the camera talk to each other about the exposure but is there something more to it?

I don't know what the "i" means.

The TTL = Through The Lens - the light enters the lens and then is metered. It only meters the light that enters the lens.

yeah that part i knew. What I am trying to figure out is how it works with the camera. But thanks for answering

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, But...My understanding of it is this; the flash uses information acquired from the lens, zoom factor, focal distance, etc. then outputs the required amount of light to properly illuminate the shot. On the new Canon 580 I understand, used with the MkII's and 20D, it even considers the crop factor of the cameras sensor.

i-TTL is Nikon's name for their TTL implementation as a part of the "Creative Lighting" system. It includes several features that extend TTL. Here's a list of all the stuff included on the SB-800:
