Light meter recommendations - 06-22-2011, 10:10 AM

I am wondering what people recommend for a light meter. I saw some of the nice new digital type ones that go for anywhere $600 and more. This is a big out of my price range. Kind of wondering though what some people might recommend on a wide price range scale.... $100 to $1000. I am looking for a good light meter in all ranges. My use for this will mostly be for when I am shooting film. Thanks

I am using a Minolta IV F meter that I got for $140 used from Adorama. Really like it and it has been really accurate.

*Kenko makes ones that look EXACTLY like the Minolta ones, but some users complain they are not as accurate.

Do you need a flash meter? I have the same Minolta Autometer IV that Keith mentioned above. It handles incident, spot & flash. $150 or less.
My most used meter is a Gossen Luna-Pro sbc. Reflected/incident/semi-spot (with attachment). $50 in a case. Looks new.
My second most used meter is a Weston Master V. Incident/reflected. No batteries.
There is a trend here. I like needles and dials. The digital Minolta doesn't do needles or dials. I suppose if I did more flash I would use it more.

All of the above are used with film.

I trust the above is sufficiently on topic.

Haha Wayne I was wondering when you would poke in here. I was gonna post this in the darkroom section but thought I might get more response here..... guess I was wrong .

I am looking for something to use with my 35mm's outside. The metering system on the N2000 is shot and Nikon what more than a rebel xs to fix it. I am not sure how the meter is on the canon 35mm I have but will find out once I finish this roll of 36. I am probably gonna take the Canon Rebel G AF with me to BBNP as I haven't had time to really clean to oil the AE-1.

Anyways.... dunno if this rambling answered your questions. Looking for a meter of low price to use for taking outdoor pictures with my 35's. No flash or strobes.

Gossen Luna-Pro sbc. It reads low light. Really low light. Like in a tunnel in the fog at night.

Or a Leica M5. The best meter I own.

I forgot.
One more. A tiny selinium (no batteries) Sekonic I bought in Missoula, MT in 1979 when I thought the meter in my Canon EF had died. The camera meter was fine. I've been carrying the meter in my bag ever since. Unused. It is my back up meter to all my other meters and cameras. It was CHEAP.

I use a Sekonic L-158. It was like $15 on ebay. Simple match needle metering. Works like a charm.

I have a Sekonic L-558R and love it! Spot metering and other goodies like a PW transmitter.

Ive got a sekonic L-308s.

It does everything that I have ever needed with the exception of spot metering (and I have rarely needed that when using an external light meter.

Seems damn accurate as well

I need to find the spot attachment for my IV F. I think the Kenko one will work.

Sekonic L-358. Works great and very easy to figure out. You can measure ambient or flash. More accurate than my camera meter.

I don't really understand the use for a light meter now that we are out of the film age. I use my eyes and sometimes my LCD.

And it works and is lots cheaper than a light meter.
