7D wireless flash operation - 07-10-2011, 10:57 AM

I've had the 7D for several months now but am just now playing with & trying to learn the wireless flash feature. I am using 2 430EX flashes and have gotten the 7D to fire them and can adjust the flash ratio, but what I would really like to do is get past the 1/250 sync speed. If I set the flashes to high speed sync it doesn't stay when they are switched to slave mode. The camera menu functions has high speed sync listed but it is grayed out and can not be selected. I've read the camera & flash manuals several times and can not find out how to set it or if it is possible.

Any help would be appreciated.

if you go to the menu screen then go to the custom functions, under C.Fn.I: Exposure, you can go to the number 7 (flash sync speed in Av mode) slot where you can select either auto, 1/250-1/60, or 1/250 fixed. hope that this is what you were looking for

Thanks Nathan but I had already tried that. I have that setting at Auto but still whether in Av or Manual it won't go past the 1/250 sync speed.

Ran into the same thing. After much research, the 7D does not support HSS in wireless mode and is limited to 1/250th sync in wireless mode. Only way I could get the HSS was direct mount to hot shoe or with an OCF cord.

Supposedly there are some radio units for OCF that support Canon HSS, but I have no experience with them.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info William. I have 2 different kinds of radio triggers (cheap brands) but they can't do high speed either. I guess for now I will have to continue using the cables.
