Good inexpensive flashes - 08-05-2011, 10:44 AM

Hey all sure this has been posted but didn't find something after a search so asking

I am looking for some flashes that had the same power as the Canon EX 580 II and 430 II but not at a 500$ price range. Let me know what might work.

I'll be using these for shooting basketball games and other indoor sporting events mostly.

Cheers,

+1 for MPEX. I was fortunate enough to visit their store in Columbus, Ohio, and they are also awesome to deal with in person.

I can also highly recommend PocketWizard Plus IIs.

nah, they are optical slaves, just turn them on, set to slave, and you don't need anything at all.

your on-camera flash will even trigger them. personally, I only have one receiver on one flash, that triggers the rest.

Hmmm interesting. I will not have an on camera flash. These will be used for shooting basketball and volleyball so they will be mounted remote on stands. I am not sure if slave would be good as other parents might be using flashes too and I wouldn't want them to trigger mine.

Everyone else's flash will trigger them as well.

I use Elinchrom Skyports. Cheaper and smaller than PocketWizards.

I think you are going to want real flashes for sports. These don't push a ton of light out. Plus, at full-power you are going to have to wait 4 seconds between shots.

Cactus V5s I think can be picked up from them as well. They are an improvement over my V4s.
