Which flash? - 09-18-2011, 10:31 AM

I want to get a flash for my Rebel, but not sure what to get. The Canon lower-end Canon flashes are near the top of my price range. Should I get a 270EX or is there a non-Canon brand that I'd be better off with?

If it makes a difference, I have no experience with flash photography. Also, I want a flash that's compatible with a 50D/60D, as I would like to upgrade my body before too long.

Personally, I'm looking at a canon 430. It's an older model, but still a really good flash. I'm looking at a used version. Excellent condition is $170-190, and bargain copies are selling for $150-160.

Is your commitment serious with photography? ...if so invest and save for the best flash more power and long term you will be happier. If not the go for the middle of the road but never low end. You end up spending twice.

I agree with buy once, but that doesn't mean you have to buy new or even Canon. Metz makes some dang fine flash units and while they aren't cheap, they may be less expensive than the equivalent Canon model.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do not want to buy a 270EX. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for a used model.
