I used small gravel, double bagged. The only problem I have had is the seams on the bag straps coming undone. I have the Fancier bags.

I went to the post office and got some tyvek priority mailing bags. Filled one with playground sand, then put a second bag the oposite direction. Sealed both bags with priority mail tape. We've abused these bags extensively, and and they dont leak.

I've got to say pennies are likely the most ingenious idea I've seen yet.

Likely I'll just use the plastic weights from walmart. I've got a few in my garage, that I don't use and they'll be great for what I need.

If you want to go that route, go to your local SCUBA Diving shop and buy the soft weights for a weight belt.
They come in sizes from 2 to 5 pounds.
I have a few in the garage.

This is what I was going to suggest. Not many items you can put in a bag that are as heavy as lead!
