Cybersyncs w/ on camera & off camera flash? - 10-26-2011, 04:41 PM

Ive read way too much today, I can hardly see straight. and yet I still feel super dumb for asking. But then again, I'm typically a hands on learner, and I don't have my equipment in front of me to look at at the moment... Anyway...

I was about to buy some cybersyncs today before I got to thinking about how the heck to use the trigger with an on camera flash and the receiver with an off camera flash...

So here's where my feeling stupid comes in...

Lately - I've had my 580 EXII on camera and a 430EX off camera. And I'd been using the TwinLink trigger/receivers and they've become a bit unreliable. Fun to play with at home...not so much in the real world. I have a cold shoe mount for the trigger to be attached to the side of the flash via 3m double sided tape and plugged into the camera w/ whichever cord it takes to do so... and then the hot shoe to tripod thread adapter which screws into the bottom of the twinlink receiver (the receiver has a hot shoe mount to attach flash w/ magnetic tripod plate that can be snapped onto the bottom).

I assume I can use the same cold shoe/3m tape mount for the Cybersync trigger. BUT - how would I attach the receiver to an off camera flash? The 430 EX doesnt have any ports to plug into does it?! I can't remember. And by the looks of it...the cybersync receiver ONLY plugs in (doesnt have a hot shoe mount)

Also - since im not using the 580 as a master for a slaved 430... im using wireless triggers... i should be able to use the 430 on camera, trigger plugged into camera, 580 off camera, receiver plugged INTO 580?? yes? Did I just talk my way into a solution by typing it out or am I more confused? haha and if you even CAN use 430 on camera and 580 off...Is there any reason to use a particular flash on camera over the other? I want another 580 anyway...

Not sure if this helps, but I use CS's with Nikon. Trigger gets taped to the side of the flash-mounted-on-camera and a small wire runs from the trigger to the camera. Receiver simply plugs into a port on the OCF.

If I understand your question you would need something like this FlashZebra.com: Deluxe Canon Hotshoe to Pocket Wizard, CyberSync or Elinchrom Skyport (Item #0138)

these are what I used to use to fire my 580EXs when I had CyberSyncs

Canon 1D Mark III, 16-35mm f/2.8L, 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, Tamron 300mm 3.8, (2) 580EX I's, Einsteins and Buff gear

but THAT...that's more like it. So the flash mounts to the hot shoe...i could still use my tripod screw in adapter to mount that on...and the plug would actually plug into the RECEIVER and the flash would flash right?!

one question is still unanswered tho - could i use the 430 on camera, trigger plugged into camera, and 580 off camera with a receiver?

thanks for the replies y'all!

(edit - it's late I typed 480 by accident, should've been 430, LOL)

Yup! Your CST should have come with a PC-miniphone sync cable for you to plug into the side of your camera. If you bought it used and it didn't you could get one of these FlashZebra.com: Screwlock PC to Pocket Wizard, CyberSync or Elinchrom Skyport (Item #0030) (which I might recommend anyway because it actually locks the cable into the PC port instead of just plugging in)

A little more elegant solution would be the Cactus V5 which has a hot shoe on top to mount the trigger and the speedlight at the same time.

You would have to set flash power and zoom manually, to some people that's a big deal
