An interesting new ringflash option - 10-27-2011, 10:23 AM

roundflash.com the collapsible ringflash adapter

Saw this on Gizmodo this morning, looks like a cool idea (though still a little pricier than I would prefer) but I would be interested in seeing what the light distribution and power loss numbers look like.

Hopefully we'll see some reviews on it in the next few weeks!

I dunno... to me, all their example images look very flat and unappealing. Yuck.

Yeah but I saw one or two that looked nice. I don't want to dismiss it based on their bad photography, but I'm not exactly inspired either...

hmm.. my one concern with attachments like this one are hotspots where the flash head is..

Ill have to check this one out a bit more and see how it handles that situation..

I always like to see new products and ideas hit the market.

Yeah, if you look at the image of the eye on their site you can see a pretty heavy hot spot where the flash head sits. Also, you seem to lose the ringflash catchlight if the flash isn't position right by the subject. Cool idea though!

I know what i would do using certain small softboxes was to leave my StoFen Omnibounce on the flash head while placed inside... thatll hurt the output a little bit but help minimize the hotspot.

Yep. In order for it to be ring - light has to be able to travel at the same speed across whole surface, with same intensity. And it clearly cant with that design.

Ditto. I like ring flash, but this looks.... awful.

I don't think its just their bad photography.. I think its a bad design.. it doesn't distribute the light properly around the ring so it really doesn't look much better than on camera flash would.

Exactly... I think its a bad design. They probably will sell a bunch of them if they get a glitzy campaign and get some better images (i.e. corrected in photoshop better).... after all, look what that one guy did selling Tupperware for your flash...

Several years ago photographers called the "eye catchlight" ... Alien eyes.
I agree that is what it looks like.

However, I am thinking about getting a couple of small Alien Bees monolights, so I might try it.
